What sort of snacks should you pack for a day out in Saariselkä?
You’ll burn more energy in the fells than when walking in town, and in windy or freezing conditions, you’ll get hungry before you know it. Plan three meals for the day: breakfast before setting off, lunch halfway along the route, and a small snack for the rest of the journey. For lunch, choose a filling meal that you can eat quickly so you don’t get cold standing still. Small snacks, such as bread rolls and flatbreads, fit easily in your pocket and can withstand the knocks of a rucksack. It’s easy to grab them whilst wearing gloves during a break. A sweet treat, such as a bun or a mix of nuts, will give you the energy you need for that final kilometre.
Also consider the group’s snacks from a transport perspective. Dry, non-perishable foods will keep well in a rucksack, whilst delicate salads need their own container. It’s a good idea to bring a thermos flask for drinks, as a warm drink is a real pick-me-up during a cold break. Divide the heaviest items of luggage amongst several rucksacks so that no one has to carry the whole group’s lunch. We’ll agree on the packing method and food choices when you place your order, once we know the length of the route and the size of your group. Please also check before setting off that everyone has their own water bottle.
When you order your packed lunch in advance, your morning starts with packing your rucksacks rather than going out to buy food.
